Chapter 6

Things changed for her after that. At the end of the first lesson with Galan, Hild returned to the bathroom with an aching body but with a smile on her face despite the aches and bruises she could feel a bit all over her frame. After that, she devoured her food and followed Galan to the bedroom.

She almost protested when he gestured for her to turn, and he bound her again, but it wasn’t as if she could convincingly tell him she wouldn’t try to strangle him in his sleep. She couldn’t be sure of that. Oh, she understood it wasn’t a good option, that killing Galan in his sleep would probably deal her a fate worse than death, but she was still so angry with him…

Much to her consternation, she found that anger weaving away as the days passed, and their interactions remained almost civil. Well, as civil as they could be between them. More than once, she had snipped at him, only to get angry when all he seemed to get from her barbs was amusement, but then they would duel with one another, and her anger seemed to disappear, replaced by a certain weariness that fell over her.

It bothered her. Being angry at him was a perfectly rational reaction, and she didn’t want to lose the shield her anger represented to her. It made it easier to ignore the way her eyes were drawn to his naked frame while they lay together at night.

And even there…

About a week after she started sleeping beside him, he stopped binding her arms behind her back. She didn’t let it fool her; she doubted he trusted her, but it did seem to indicate he trusted she knew better. And she did. Harming him would only ensure a worse fate – for her and for Bertha and Lina.

It made her nights even more complicated.

He insisted on her sleeping pressed against him every night, and though she grumbled about it every time, part of her enjoyed it. There was something nice about having another warm body against yours, even if dark elves didn’t seem to run as hot as humans did.

More than once, she woke up with her frame molded to his, blushing red when she took in his nakedness, though with each day that passed, her eyes seemed to linger more and more on him. Worse than that, she was sure that was precisely what Galan had expected.

Hild wasn’t a fool. She knew the dark elf was trying to seduce her. A blind person would have been able to see that. She never thought he would have a chance of succeeding, and yet she had to remind herself that he was a monster every night, every day. She had to remind herself of that as she dueled against him and listened to his instructions, as she felt his body against hers as he showed her how to turn and parry a specific thrust.

The blonde was getting more comfortable in his presence and unable to feel the same anger against him as she had before.
